How to Create an Effective Job Search Strategy

One question I get day in day out is “where do I even start my job search?”. And while I wish that was a simple question to answer, it’s a bit more complicated of an answer than “just start here”.

There are many different strategies that can be effective for job searching, and the best approach for you will depend on your individual circumstances and goals. If you don’t have a mentor yet, finding a mentor that can help you with soft skills coaching, expanding your technical knowledge and even navigating the job search.

Here are some general tips that may be helpful as you start your job search:

  1. Start by identifying your goals and strengths: Before you start applying for jobs, it can be helpful to spend some time thinking about what you want to achieve in your career and what your strengths and skills are. This will help you focus your job search and tailor your applications to positions that are a good fit for you.
  2. Create a strong resume and cover letter template: Your resume is often the first thing a potential employer will see, so it’s important to make a good impression. Make sure your resume is well-written, organized, and highlights your relevant skills and experience. Your cover letter should be tailored to the specific job you’re applying for and explain why you’re a good fit for the role, and having a template that you can revise as you apply to new jobs will help streamline your job search and applying to jobs.
  3. Use a variety of job search resources: There are many different ways to find job openings, including online job boards, networking, and not just in places you think. Social media, like Reddit, Discord and Slack can all be great places to meet, network and build relationships with people who are in your industry. It’s a good idea to use a mix of these resources to maximize your chances of finding a job that’s a good fit for you. Job boards are great, but having a diverse application strategy is smart.
  4. Network, network, network: Networking can be a powerful tool for finding job openings and connecting with potential employers. Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and reach out to your connections to let them know you’re looking for a job.
  5. Be persistent and follow up: It’s normal to face some rejection during a job search, but don’t let that discourage you. Keep applying and following up with potential employers to show your interest in the role. And, if you’re not getting any responses, consider reaching out to a recruiter for help.

One thing to keep in mind is that your job search strategy should evolve. As you apply to new roles, interview, receive rejections, etc use that information to strategically improve your strategy to set yourself up for success.
